MINI MEDICAL SCHOOL
Alaska WWAMI coordinates the production of the yearly Mini Medical School -- a collaboration between Alaska WWAMI, various Alaskan physicians and health-care providers, and the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Open to the public, the Mini Medical School lecture series offers topics from the world of medicine that are of interest to all Alaskans. The lectures are presented each year on Tuesday evenings in October; the location alternates yearly between Anchorage and Fairbanks, and videoconference technology allows participation in other locations.
DELLA KEATS/U-DOC SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
The Della Keats / U-DOC Summer Enrichment Program is a program offered through the University of Alaska WWAMI Biomedical Program. The goal of the Della Keats/U-DOC program is to foster, affirm, and encourage high school students’ interest in the medical professions by allowing them to explore health careers and to obtain a valuable introduction to college life. Application is open to disadvantaged Alaskan students, currently enrolled as juniors or seniors in high school, who have a strong interest in the health-care professions.
NIDDK STEP-UP PROGRAM
The purpose of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease's STEP-UP Program is to encourage high school juniors and seniors from underrepresented ethnic minority backgrounds to enter the fields of medicine and biomedical research. Each NIDDK STEP-UP participant is paired with a seasoned UAA researcher and completes a research project under his or her mentorship. Participating students also take some academic classes with Della Keats/U-DOC Program participants. Della Keats/U-DOC and NIH NIDDK program participants share the university campus and dormitory experience and extracurricular activities.
ALASKA PRE-MED SUMMIT
Alaska WWAMI and the UAA Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship present the Alaska PreMed Summit each spring on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. First offered in April 2006, the purpose of the Alaska PreMed Summit is to provide information to anyone interested in pursuing a career in medicine. High school students, undergraduates, and college graduates are invited to attend. Information is also provided for high school counselors, college advisors, and parents.
MEDEX PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT TRAINING PROGRAM
MEDEX Northwest is a regional physician assistant training program offered by the University of Washington School of Medicine. The program trains students from the five WWAMI states (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) and Nevada to practice medicine with physician supervision. As a pioneer in PA education, MEDEX continues to be innovative in identifying, creating, and filling new niches for PAs as a strategy for expanding health care access.
R/UOP
The Rural / Underserved Opportunities Program (R/UOP) is a four-week elective immersion experience for students between their first and second years of medical school. Students participating in R/UOP work side-by-side with physicians in rural or urban underserved communities throughout the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). Students are encouraged to explore the communities during these four-week experiences.
SPARX Alaska
SPARX (Student Providers Aspiring to Rural and Underserved EXperience) is a multidisciplinary effort of the University of Washington Schools of Health Sciences that encourages health profession students to consider practice in rural and urban medically underserved communities and to promote effective team work across disciplines. Activities bring together students in the schools of social work, medicine (including MEDEX), nursing, pharmacy, public health and community medicine and dentistry to offer students experiences to learn about and work with medically underserved populations while they are in their training.

WRITE
The WWAMI Rural Integrated Training Experience (WRITE) Program is a clinical medical education program developed by the University of Washington School of Medicine as means to help meet the need for rural primary care physicians in the WWAMI region. The success of this unique program is due to the integration of community involvement, continuity of experience and a proven curriculum.
The WRITE Program is designed to give selected third-year medical students an appropriate mix of ambulatory and hospital experience during a 20-week clinical education experience at a rural primary care teaching site. Throughout the program, the WRITE student has the opportunity to develop a practice style while learning how to treat a broad range of medical, surgical and psychological problems. Learning experiences emphasize the rural physician’s responsibilities and roles of diagnosing, treating and managing the majority of health problems on a longitudinal, continuing basis, while calling upon all the health care resources available in the community.
ALASKA FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY
The Alaska Family Medicine Residency is a member of the WWAMI Network of Family Medicine Residencies. Its full three-year program is based in Anchorage and includes a six-week rotation at a rural site -- Bethel or Dillingham.
Curriculum of the Alaska Family Medicine Residency includes:
