ALASKA PRE-MED SUMMIT
WWAMI - Alaska's Medical School and the UAA University Honors College presented the third annual Alaska PreMed Summit on Saturday, March 29, 2008. The PreMed Summit was held in UAA's Rasmuson Hall and was also offered, via live videoconference, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Alaska Southeast. More than two hundred participants, speakers, and volunteers attended the event statewide.
The PreMed Summit is intended to provide information to anyone wanting to learn more about the process of becoming a physician. It is especially helpful for undergraduate and high school students, but high school counselors, college advisors, and parents are also welcome to attend.
Participants of the 2008 Alaska PreMed Summit received the opportunity to:
- Listen to the keynote address given by Jay Butler, M.D., Chief Medical Officer for the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.
- Hear pre-medical undergraduates, current medical students, medical school graduates in residency training, and practicing physicians describe their experiences. As in previous years, this was a highlight of the day for many participants.
- Gain knowledge of how to apply to US medical schools, including WWAMI – Alaska’s Medical School.
- Participate in a mock medical school interview.
- Tour the Alaska WWAMI Program first-year medical student facilities.
The special focus of the 2008 Alaska PreMed Summit was on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Steven Barkley of the MCAT Division of the Association of American Medical Colleges discussed "The New MCAT."
