SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ALASKAN MEDICAL STUDENTS

Scholarships are available for Alaskan medical students, and they can be a welcome means of reducing dependence on loans. The following is a partial list of scholarships available for Alaskan medical students.

Government Program Scholarships

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Programs offer tuition, fees, and a stipend to medical students. These scholarships also obligate recipients to active duty in one of the armed services.

Local Scholarships

Alaska Sea Services Scholarship Program - Awards for dependent child or regular / reserve member of the Navy, Marines or Coast Guard on active duty, retired with pay, deceased, or MIA.  Must be legal resident of Alaska, have high academic standards and show character, leadership ability and financial need.

Scholarships for Alaska Native Students

UW School of Medicine Scholarships

UW School of Medicine Scholarship - This is a need based scholarship. Students must provide parental information on their FAFSA and attach a SIGNED copy of parent's 2007 tax return (with all attachments) to their scholarship application. Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship for Medical Students

The Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship (CRF) provides support for one year of full-time clinical research training. The main goal of the program is to encourage medical students to pursue careers in clinical research. Interested medical students must be willing to take a year out from school and conduct fellowship research and training at one of 12 hosting medical schools.

National Italian American Foundation Scholarship Program

National Institutes of Health – Clinical Research Electives

National Institutes of Health – Clinical Research Training Program – Medical or dental students selected for this fellowship program spend 12 months working directly with NIH researchers in mentored clinical or translational research projects in areas matching their own interests and goals. Fellows must be enrolled in an accredited US medical or dental school; must be US citizens or permanent residents; and must have permission from their home institution to take a year out of school.

National Medical Fellowships

Paul Ambrose Scholars Program - Introduces health professions students to influential public health professionals and prepares them to be leaders in addressing public health challenges. This unique experience provides scholarships for 40 students (in allopathic medicine and other professional programs) to attend a three-day leadership symposium and conduct a funded community-based health education project.
