Alaska WWAMI and the Community

MEDICAL RESIDENTS

Residency opportunities in Alaska are quite competitive.  They offer residents a chance to experience medical practice in both urban and rural settings.  However, in Alaska rural is truly rural.  Many communities can only be reached by air or water.  Alaska has the only US state capital that cannot be reached by road.

The   Alaska Family Medicine Residency   is a member of the WWAMI Network of Family Medicine Residencies.  Its full three-year program is based in Anchorage.   A six-week block in the R2 year is spent in either Bethel at the   Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital   or in Dillingham at  Kanakanak Hospital.

Curriculum of the Alaska Family Medicine Residency includes:

  • General Surgery/Endoscopy
  • Internal Medicine
  • Obstetrics-Gynecology
  • Orthopedics/Sports Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Rural Experience
  • Specialty Clinics
  • Trans-Cultural Medicine
  • Electives
  • Behavioral Sciences
  • Emergency Medicine
