"Alaska Track"
Students who choose to be on the "Alaska Track" can complete all of the required third-year clerkships in Alaska. Special seminars and other training opportunities are available to Anchorage clerkship students, throughout the year. Clerkship students are called upon to provide guidance to Alaska WWAMI first-year students and are encouraged to participate in activities at the Anchorage Family Medicine Residency. The clinical coordinator is Dr. Tom Nighswander.
WWAMI Rural Integrated Training Experience (WRITE)
WRITE is a five-month experience that provides core clerkship credit for family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and psychiatry. It is a continuity experience that is based in one community, providing students with the opportunity to follow patients and families over a period of time. Many students do more deliveries in this rotation than in the standard OB/GYN clerkship.
Site housing is provided, and there is enough flexibility in the program for students to have experiences in the operating room and emergency room. Alaska's two WRITE sites are Palmer/Wasilla and Juneau. More information about Alaska WRITE Program.
Fourth-Year Core Clerkships
Three clerkships are required in the fourth year: Chronic Care, Emergency Medicine, and Neurology. Chronic Care and Emergency Medicine are not available in Alaska at this time. The Alaska WWAMI neurology clerkship is on temporary sabbatical, due to the loss of one of our Faculty.
Fourth-Year Electives
Alaska WWAMI offers a wide variety of fourth-year electives, including:

In addition, a number of fourth-year subspecialty pediatric elective rotations are being developed in the following areas: allergy/immunology; cardiology; gastroenterology; pulmonology; surgery; and NICU. These sites are being coordinated and developed by Dr. Jon Lyon.
